On September 13 and 14, 1814, the British navy attacked Baltimore Harbor from the Chesapeake Bay. Fort McHenry resisted the attack. Defending the port city of Baltimore was crucial, and this American victory eventually led to the 1813 Peace Agreement. If you haven’t been to Fort McHenry National Monument, you are missing out. 1. It’s Inclusive and Wheelchair Accessible 

As part of the National Park Service, Fort McHenry offers accessibility features to welcome everyone. Bathrooms, exhibit areas, the visitor center, picnic areas, and the seawall comply with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design). Service animals (according to the ADA definition) are allowed into the park. If you come in a handicap-capable car, reserved parking is available.

2. It’s Kid-Friendly

Don’t let solemn words like “shrine” trick you into believing this is not a place for kids. At Fort McHenry, kids are not only welcome; there are plenty of activities for them to enjoy. For example, they offer a Junior Ranger program, musket demonstrations, and they host the yearly “War of 1813 Fife and Drum Camp”. Kids can participate in the morning and evening flag change. The park also hosts field trips that include a teacher’s guide and lesson plans.

3. There Are Fun Events 

On Fort McHenry’s website, you can find a calendar with many exciting events. Discover American history by participating in exciting reenactments and demonstrations guided by the park’s knowledgeable rangers. From time to time, you may even get to see Navy ships docked on the bay. There’s also a yearly airshow by the USAF Thunderbirds.

4. It’s Surrounded By Nature

Fort McHenry sits on 43 acres of land that are home to a diverse natural community. The Seawall trail is a 0.9-mile loop that goes around the park. If you are lucky, you may see red foxes, snapping turtles, bats, and river otters; among many other species. Always remember to follow rules and regulations, they are in place to protect wildlife and to protect you.

5. The History

Fort McHenry was paramount in America’s history. At the visitor center, you may watch a 15-minute slideshow that explains this place’s strategic role in shaping our country. They will also tell you all about how our National Anthem was born (hint: it happened at Fort McHenry). If you want to learn more, listen to one of the park ranger’s talks.

6. The Fort 

Visiting the actual fort and admiring the canyons and other artillery is an impressive experience in itself. If you are lucky, you might get to see a cannon-firing demonstration!
